We are a
multi-age Guiding unit as both Rainbows aged from 5 to 7
years and Brownies aged from 7 to 10 years meet all
together on Monday evenings in term time in the Parish
Centre, the Rainbows from 5.30pm to 6.30pm and the
Brownies from 5.30pm to 7.00pm. This gives the girls a
great opportunity to mix with other ages. The girls sing
their special songs at the start of the evening (the
Rainbows always singing louder than the Brownies!) and
they then engage in their separate activities.
Rainbows do lots of crafts and cooking (with adult
supervision), play games and generally have lots of fun.
They also join in with Brownie badges and are currently
working on the Rainbows 25th Birthday badge. Over the
past year they have had two special craft days, one all
about fairies, when they also made fairy cakes, and the
other was a Christmas Glue and Glitter day when they
made lots of sparkly Christmas crafts and again did some
cooking, including Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer cakes.
Rainbows go on trips too, this last year to Twycross Zoo
and to Berzerk, a local children’s activity centre, for
the Queen’s Jubilee.
At the meetings Brownies do crafts, play games, and work
for lots of badges. Badges completed so far this year
include the Smarties badge, the Northamptonshire County
Council Emergency Planning badge, the Recycle, Reduce
and Re-use badge, and the Asthma Trigger Happy badge.
Over the past year the Brownies have been on several
trips, including to the National Space Centre in
Leicester and the pantomime Aladdin at Northampton
Derngate, as well as a pack holiday to Twywell near
Kettering and the annual Brownie Hike, walking six miles
and learning how to use bus timetables to catch two
buses to Earls Barton for the start of the hike.
32nd St Matthew’s Rainbows and Brownies is a sponsored
unit, involved with many of St Matthew’s Church events,
including the Summer Fete, the Christmas Fayre and
church cleaning mornings (for which they were sponsored
and raised a fantastic £61 for the Asthma UK charity,
and was part of their Asthma Trigger Happy badge). They
also take an active part in the monthly All Age Mass.
Girls are strongly encouraged to attend as part of the
A recent ‘Taster Evening’ and a publicity stand at a
local school fete attracted two new Rainbows and two new
Brownies; numbers are currently low so there is still
room for more!
