Our annual
summer community event drew a lot of people eager to
enjoy the various games, stalls and attractions. To
open, the church bells rang out a selection of
well-known popular tunes not normally heard before
church services… In the church was ‘Pop Goes the Organ’
– sponsored popular songs played on the organ – while in
the parish centre there were afternoon teas and a chance
to sit and rest out of the sun, and in a separate room
(!) a display of reptiles. The main event took place out
on a sunny church green, with a display of Irish
dancing, classic cars, model boats, a NSB band, bouncy
castle, wet-sponge stocks, and plenty of opportunity to
spend pocket money on the various games for the children
and hard-earned cash on the stalls for the adults. The
afternoon culminated in the Raffle with an array of
prizes, and to finish off, a communal tug of war.
Whilst one of our major fund-raising events for the
church, for St Matthew’s folk it was, as always, a
wonderful opportunity to meet and chat with the families
and individuals that came along, some of whom might not
normally come to the church itself.
