Free admission with a retiring collection

St Matthew’s Church, Northampton, has held a special place in the cultural life of the country since its foundation 125 years ago, in 1893. In particular, the church has been known around the world for its commissioning of significant works of art and music – by Henry Moore, Benjamin Britten, Graham Sutherland and Gerald Finzi among others – and for the strong musical tradition which has nourished it for several years.

As part the community of St Matthew’s celebrating 125 years, the church is looking to develop its future musical provision through launching the St Matthew’s Music Foundation, enabling many more young people to enjoy the benefits of a chorister education. The work of the Foundation seeks to widen access to the English choral tradition through increasing the church’s musical partnership work with schools, funding an organ scholarship scheme to generate the church organists of the future, establishing choral scholars in partnership with the university, and enhancing the offer to adult singers through dedicated singing tuition.

The Foundation will be launched on St Cecilia’s Day (St Cecilia being the patron saint of musicians), Thursday 22 November, at 7.30 pm, at a special free concert given by the church’s choir and musicians. The concert will last approximately one hour and will feature some of the works commissioned by St Matthew’s as well as a special performance from BBC Young Chorister of the Year finalist and St Matthew’s Chorister Sophie Stringfellow.

Christmas Cheer – back by popular demand!

Start your Christmas celebrations off with a festive concert featuring two of Northampton's finest choirs – the choir of St Matthew's Church and Northampton Chamber Choir. The evening will include a range of Christmas favourites – including traditional carols like Ding dong! merrily on high and In dulci jubilo and popular hits like White Christmas and Walking in the air. Veteran BBC broadcaster Paul Vaughan will keep the audience entertained with poetry and new takes on familiar stories that are sure to make you laugh. As was the case last year, there will be ample opportunities for the audience to dust of their vocal chords and join in with the singing!

Andrew Thompson, a singer from the choir of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, will be our soloist for Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on Christmas Carols. This is Andrew's second appearance in Northampton, and his first since this year's royal weddings in St George's Chapel.

At the organ will be Glen Dempsey, virtuoso organ scholar at St John's College, Cambridge. Glen will delight the audience with organ solos, including Sleigh Ride.

Drinks will be available for a donation at the interval, and there will be a selection of Christmas treats available for purchase including homemade chutneys and jams.

Tickets are available to purchase online through our booking partner, Eventbrite. Clicking the 'Buy Tickets Online' image on the right will take you to our booking partner's website. Please note that Eventbrite charge a small booking fee.

St Matthew's Church is wheelchair accessible and there is a toilet suitable for all mobility needs in the Church. There is plenty of on-street parking around the church, but please allow sufficient time to park your car. If you have any other queries regarding the concert please contact us.
